Sonal Sheth is a Trustee of Women's Movement for Peace and Prosperity (WMPP) She is connected to 'Women Graduate's Union' which was started in 1915.
I was invited by her to a Session they were conducting on 'Productive Ageing'

Amita Lavekar said:
We are moving from elderly to well dearly

You lead a 'productive life' when you 'contribute'
Maintain an active interest in life
Ageing does not happen at 60...It happens right from the moment that you are conceived in the womb...(so why make a big deal of it?)

Few age uniformly in the following 6 fields, so what we are trying to say is that many skills remain as one ages...

The 6 Fields that very few age uniformly in:
chronological, Biological, Social, Functional, Performance, Cognitive...

Whatever strengths you have should be strengthened further...

Indifference of the Soul is what we need to worry about more than the ageing of the body...

To get attached to the past is dangerous...

A bored adult can be dangerous for the community...

Help your Society and Community...

Ms Naini Setalwad (Nutrition and Ageing Dietician said:

Cook the way you cook...but add:
Garlic (it prevents knee pain)
Also add:
Onion, bananas, olive oil, turmeric, nuts, prunes...

Then I just got this email:

1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay 'them'

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning.Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. 'An idle mind is the devil's workshop.' And the devil's name is Alzheimer's.

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7.. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don't take guilt trips.Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

And if you don't send this to at least 8 people - who cares? But do share this with someone. We all need to live life to its fullest each day!!

For the Group 21 of October, we celebrated Diwali...As such we had to package the gifts and interchange them. This gift has an environment message...Some of the notes urge you to:
Save Water, Shower with a friend...
Recycle paper, it comes from trees
Save electricity, Light a diya
Love your neighbour, not HER HUSBAND!
This gift packaged by 'Yours Truly'
There were other gorgeously packaged gifts, which won admiration and prizes!

We played 'Sach ka Saamna' Enjoyed it thoroughly and learned so much more about our friends of over 30 years! Most were sporting enough to disclose their heart kept secrets...and I am sure that we will keep those secrets safe in our hearts! What say u?
The party was hosted by Poonam Asha Mulchandani, Ms Rani Daswani and Ms Sharmila Dadlani

IIWA (Iqra International Women's Alliance) has adopted 'Ambujwadi Nagar'
In the pictures alongside: Grand Entrance to Ambujwadi and
NO RECESSION HERE. THIS IS THEIR DAILY CHORE

The Women's Movement for Peace and Prosperity (WMPP) has got 2 main objectives:
To connect with good people, good NGOs to realize their dream of making WMPP into a Movement...
We have done that. We are connected with 'Sage' Eager to B. MRA(Initiatives of Change) and IIWA
We connect with the Prerna Singing and Lecture Group...

The other objective of WMPP is to give Voice to the Voiceless Woman...
Let me lead you to its logic...
Women are by nature, compassionate and abhor violence...
How come there is so much violence in the world, despite every family having women members as wives, sisters, daughters?
Obviously the Women's Voice is not heard...
Why is it not heard?
Because maybe she lacks education, an intelligent, logical way to communicate, no financial independance...
So if we provide the above, the world will move towards Peace and Prosperity...

Symbols of the tools carried by the Gods

The following is inspired by Devdutt Pattanaik. It is so interesting that I thought I should share it with you....
Read on

Lord Shiva carries a trident and a rattle drum

Brahma is identified by his:
Books, rosary and pot

Vishnu is identified with 4 symbols:
Conch shell, trumpet or shankh, discus whirring around his index finger or chakra
A mace or gadda and a lotus or padma

Vishnu’s Conchshell or Shankh:
It is blown to announce his presence in a battlefield in Vedic times…it is a measure of lung power and mind control…

Vishnu’s Chakra which whirrs around his index finger is a weapon and a symbol.
As a Weapon: It strikes the target and returns to Vishnu’s finger.
As a symbol of life it indicates that what goes around comes around…
The mace or gadda is like a teacher’s ruler to punish those who do not do what they are supposed to do.

The Lotus is born, lives and dies in the water and yet remains untouched by water…The Lotus inspires us of the same mode of conduct in Life. Though we are born in the world, live in the world and die in the world we should be untouched by it!

Maya and Myself at a function chatting lovingly, enjoying our friendship and the way we connect!

Sage Foundation in association with the PATT foundation successfully carried out the plantation of 2000 trees at INS TRATA at Aksha Mumbai the funds for the same were donated by Standard Chartered bank.
Mighty proud of Maya Shahani, Chairperson, Sage Foundation and Chairperson Emeritus Women's Movement for Peace and Prosperity, WMPP)

How correct networking helps Mother Earth

The seed of tree plantations was sown in Mr Ram Maheshwary's office at the Times. He had organized an amazing get together for Irene Millar, General Manager of XL Foundation who had immediately sent an EMail to the Chairperson of PATT Foundation about Mr Maheshwary's passion for tree plantations. Subsequently Mr Ram had organized a meeting with SAGE and Kamal Damania introduced Maya to the Navy Commanders Singh and Sharma. Maya has been coordinating with them ever since, and this plantation of 2000 trees is the outcome of their collective effort.

Maya has just come back from Bali where she was awarded the XL Extraordinay Life Award for 2009. This is a global award given after a system of voting by all the XL members globally. In Maya's acceptance speech she mentioned how the Times Foundation had been instrumental in her growth.

Someone in Australia is coming out with a movie called "War without Guns" and he has asked Maya to distribute this movie in India as it is focused on the power of the feminine. Maya has told him all about the Women's Movement for Peace and Prosperity and Shakun's Gems of all Faiths.

PS: I, Shakun have written a book on the 'Power of the Feminine' but am awaiting a sponsor for the same' I know the Lord will send me the right person at the right time...

Ms Amla Ruia has done tremendous work on Water harvesting in the remote areas of Rajasthan...Today Mumbai has awakened to its need. She enlightened us on 'Water' She spoke about Water drops being like 'Silver'...If we heard that 'Silver' is raining...Would we not run out with our buckets and pails to collect it? Well that is what we need to do with Rain Water...Amla not only enlightened us on 'Water' but also inspired us with Songs on the 'Silver Liquid'
Amla belongs to many organizations but more importantly for me, we were instrumental (along with Ms Vimla Patil and Maya Shahani) in starting 'Eager to B.' a group of ladies who have done so much with their lives and who are eager to do more...We meet once a month to enrich one another...I like to believe that 'Eager to B. is an extension of WMPP (Women's Movement for Peace and Prosperity)...Women's Movement is a Movement and it can only become a Movement if we add an connect with other organizations...Lately we have connected with MRA now known as Initiatives of Change...Dr Anand and his charming wife Asha have a meeting with interesting speakers on the 1st Saturday of the month so I thought why not invite WMPP and Eager to B.to the meeting...Asha an Dr Anand were so gracious about it! Here is one enthusiastic couple hmm Eager couple to B !
In the photograph Ms Amla and Mala Daswani President of the Queens Rotary Club, also a dear dear friend!

Gift Forgiveness this Diwali, no matter what is happening around you. Forgiveness releases a prisoner: YOU
Rancour is like carrying a sack of rotten potatoes on your back...Put it down, throw it away...
People say: I can forgive, I cant Forget..so Dont...Just say loudly: I forgive! and move on with your life, the Universe and time will do the rest!....Just like when you are physically hurt, you clean it and rub an ointment and place a bandage...Nature and Time does the rest!
I was reading an article: Anger, A New Ailment' by Firoz Bakht
...Forgivess does not meaning giving in. It means letting go.
Once we forgive, we are no longer emotionally handcuffed to the person who hurt us. When we forgive we reclaim our power to choose...
...and I add TO LIVE!

...Oh people may think and/or say: Who are you to forgive? We need to forgive you...no matter! You dont have to put it into words or go up and hug the person (it may irritate them if they are looking at it from only their perspective)...Say it in your mind and release it to the Universe...

Happy New Year to all of you
Love and Light

Many of you request me to tell you the way, the Sindhis perform the Diwali puja. I am going to tell you later. But first, have you heard what Maansic Puja is?

Maansic Puja , is a puja in which you require nothing but your imagination. You visualise the puja. It may be simple or elaborate. It can take place at any exotic location. And you can use the most exorbitant ingredients, as you have to pay for them in terms of only your faith and love. The advantage of a Maansic Puja is that your mind cannot wander. The Scriptures promise the same rewards for this Imaginary form of worship Try the above puja anytime that you are on a flight of fancy, or literal.

Now for the conventional puja:

Mona Shah Patel of the PPI Professionals Party of India (PPI). had stood as an Independant for the last elections...This time Santosh Awatramani is standing...

This photograph was taken at our Dassera Celebration...
I support women and clean candidates...you may not agree with me...
BUT
Whatever you do and your heart dictates you to do...VOTE YOU MUST

Santosh aims to make governance citizen-centric... loves simplicity, is friendly and accessible. He wants to know what is going on in Governance, and he wants you to know what is coming, not after but before.
He says:
I want you to be able to suggest and intervene where necessary; but this can only be done if you are informed before not after.

I believe that Mumbai needs less governance; it needs us to be more involved.

Did you know that each MLA is entitled to spending 1crore a year indicatively on the following area:

Community Hall, Library, Road Improvement, including Foot Bridges, Stone Pavements
and Drainage, Banks/sides of Nalla, Water Supply , Education ,Gym/Health , Cremation Ground , Four Cross , Flood/Disaster Rehab, Beautification of Open Spaces, Waterfronts, Ponds, Rivers, Forts,
Pavements, Bus Terminus, Tree Guards etc, Compound Walls, Cleanliness & Toilets , and Public Utilities in declared slums .

Do you know how this money has been spent in your constituency for all these years? When elected I shall seek your inputs in deciding on how this money is spent, as it is your money.

I truly believe that I can be the bridge between you and governance.

So please vote on 13 October 2009.
Santosh Awatramani

Attended the sixth Nani Palkhivala Memorial Lecture today, the 5th of October at the NCPA, Tata Theatre, Nariman Point.
Mr P. Chidambaram the Hon'ble Home Minister of the Govt of India spoke on the 'The Emerging Challenges to Civil Society'

Awards were given to Public Concern for Governance Trust (NGO) and the Outstanding Individual Award went to Smt Aruna Roy for keeping Civil Liberties alive.

An interesting point made about the Right to Information Act:
When we send our child to the market with Rs 10 we ask him for the acct.
The govt spends millions of the peoples' money does not the people have the right to information?

Figure this one out! (I hope, I understood it correctly...On second thoughts, I hope I did not)
The Supreme Court was asked to provide some information.
Supreme Court did not provide it (the information)
An appeal was made to the High Court.
The High Court asked the Supreme Court to disclose the information...
The Supreme Court is appealing to Itself...

It reads like Alice in Wonderland...

Mr Narayan Varma, Dr R.K. Anand, Mr B.G.Deshmukh, Julio Ribeiro were felicitated for their good work.

Mr Chidambaram took us on an Indian tour since Independance...'A tryst with Destination'

An interesting evening!

Thai Theme for the Group 21

Sandy Melwani was our Thai Beauty, instructor for the session. She successfully took us through some Thai interesting customs.
Thailand is known as the 'Land of Smiles'
Thais believe:

Thais believe in 'Sunook' which means, fun
Their favourite remark: 'My pen rai'Which means: Why bother? Keep on smiling!*Don't Dont eat cold rice with hot rice because you will lose your way.

Sandy took us through the mysteries of the Thai cuisine.
Thai Cuisine is hot and spicy. There is a balance of food: Ying and Yang
Their main ingredient is karela (bitter gourd) and yet Thai women are so sweet, and smile always!
They use quinine, Mediterranean basil, lemon grass, garlic shallots...Thai cuisine is well-known for being hot and spicy and for its balance of five fundamental flavours in each dish or the overall meal - hot (spicy), sour, sweet, salty, and bitter (optional).

*sanook = sanuk

*my pen rai= mai pen rai

* karela is one of their main ingredients and it contains quinine, which gives it the characteristic bitter taste.

*Thai basil is also a key ingredient, not Mediterranean basil. Also, the former is sweeter than the latter, despite popular belief.

To complete the most enjoyable session we were served excellent Thai food!

Sandy is planning on doing various workshops on cuisine from all over the world...But she claims that she has been inspired by Sindhi way of cooking...and I am surely going to organize another session to learn about the same!

We had a Thai Theme for our Group 21 meeting.
We were threatened that if we do not dress in Thai clothes we would have to show our Thighs...so we took it seriously and in these photographs you see Thai Beauties no?

I have been reading The Palace of Illusions by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

The author has placed Draupadi in the forefront of the action…her joys, doubts, struggles, triumphs, heartbreaks, achievements…
Presenting some of the excerpts that have touched my heart.

Dhai Ma says to young Draupadi:
…“Love comes like lightening and disappears the same way. If you are lucky it strikes you right…I advise you to forget about love, princess. Pleasure is simpler and duty more important. Learn to be satisfied by them”

Krishna says to Draupadi:
…“A problem becomes a problem only if you believe it to be so, and often others see you as you see yourself”…

…“As for being pawns , ar’nt we all pawns in the hands of Time, the greatest player of them all”…

When Draupadi asked Krishna what kind of palace He thought she should have, Krishna said: “Already you live within a nine-gated palace, the most wondrous structure of all. Understand it well: it will be your salvation or your downfall.”

Draupadi said: “If I am a queen I owe it to my palace.”
Krishna frowned and said: “Don’t be so attached to what is, after all, no more than metal and stone and asura sleight of hand. All things in this world change and pass away—some after many years, some overnight. Appreciate the Palace of Illusions, by all means. But if you identify so deeply with it, you set yourself up for sorrow.”

…Krishna gazed into my eyes. Was it love I saw in his face? If so, it was different in kind from all the loves I knew. Or perhaps the loves I had known had been something different, and this alone was love. It reached past my body, my thoughts, my shaking heart, into some part of me that I hadn’t known existed. My eyes closed of their own accord. I felt myself coming apart like the braided edge of a shawl, the threads reaching everywhere…

…Can’t you ever be serious? I asked mortified.
“It’s difficult,” He (Krishna) said. “There’s so little in life that’s worth it”….

…”They’re saying the gods are angry at Sisupal’s death.”
“Priests like to say such things” Krishna replied. He didn’t seem too concerned about the anger of the gods…

When Draupadi was being disrobed:
…The wind smelled of sandalwood. Krishna sat beside me on a cool stone bench. His glance was bright and tender. “No one can shame you, He said, if you don’t allow it”
It came to me in a wash of amazement, that He was right.
Let them stare at my nakedness I thought. Why should I care? They and not I should be ashamed for shattering the bounds of decency”.
Was that not miracle enough?
Krishna nodded. He took my hands. At His touch I felt my muscles relax, my fists open. He smiled, and I prepared to smile back…

… “A situation in itself is neither happy or unhappy. It’s only your response to it that gives you sorrow. But enough of philosophy, I am hungry…”

Krishna explains to Draupadi about hatred

…Suddenly Krishna reached out and pulled a half burnt stick from the fire. He thrust it at me so that I flinched back.
“What are you doing?” I cried startled and angry.
“Trying to show you something. The stick—it scared you right? It may even have hurt you, if you hadn’t been so quick. But look –in trying to burn you, It’s consuming itself. That’s what happens to a heart---“

Draupadi thinks later:
“I know you want me to drop my hatred, Krishna” I whispered, It’s the one thing you’ve asked me for. But I can’t. Even if I wanted to. I don’t know how anymore”
Outside the hut, the shal trees bent and swayed, their leaves like sighs.

…I knew that the remedy lay not in finding a new flower but in what Krishna had advised me over and over again: Let the past go. Be at ease. Allow the future to arrive at its own pace, unfurling its secrets when it will. I knew I should live the life that teemed around me: this clear air, this newborn sunlight, the simple comfort of the shawl around my shoulders…”

Radha...Her Love was unconditional and supreme

When do you know when you are in love? or love anyone...the fact is that no two individuals can profess to love each other in exactly the same way and same depth...
Some suggestions:
You are in love when you would rather not live without the other person.
When he or she is the first that springs to mind in happiness and grief
When the other person is a constant companion even in absentia
When sometimes your loved one's happiness takes precedence over yours

Such a loving may or may not last a lifetime, but whatever the span it soaks up your entire being...
Excerpts from 'Are you really in love' Times Life Sept, 27th 2009 by Vinita Dawra Nangia

However I believe that there are various kinds of Love
1) You scratch my back and I shall scratch yours...
2) Romeo Juliet, Heer Ranjha, Sasui Punoo kind of love...where it is believed that they were soul mates or One soul divided in two or twin souls...
...and then we have the Spiritual Love...totally unconditional...We have never seen God...yet a lot of us Love Him...Radha's love for Krishna absolutely unconditional...Meera who sings...Jahaan bithaave ut hi baithoon jo de soyee khaaoon, Meera ke Prabhu Giridhar Naagar, Baar baar bali jaaoon...

For the Group 21 of the month of September, the speaker was Ms Shobha Gehani (in white) Jethmalani...She explained to us how imperative it is to donate our organs. She has a first hand experience in the case of her sister Rani, who had to have a kidney transplant after a liver transplant at a time where such transplants were rare...(Rani leads a full life)
The first transplants that we are familiar with are blood transfusions, cornea transplants...
Some people ask 'If we donate an organ, will be born without it?'
Where is the logic in that question?
I have always heard that whatever you donate returns amply to you...So going by that logic, If we donate an eye maybe we will never need to wear specks in our next life, no?

Anju and Myself at China Garden, Bombay

How wonderful to meet, connect and love!
Years then do not matter...

My lovely serene, flute playing Krishna (gifted to me by my family on my birthday) is also in the picture...
Whenever I feel concerned about something, I look at Krishna playing the flute and think: If the Lord who runs the Universe can feel so serene, with all that He needs to overlook, why should I need to think and worry?

I have always believed that opposites can tick...can is the key word...read on

Dr Harris Shetty, psychiatrist says:
We look for an alter ego who will complete us. At times one looks for what one is not.. So a guy who likes to party may land up with someone sober...

Dr Nirmala s Rao, Mumbai based psychiatrist reccommends: Relationships are about getting our own needs met, often on an unconscious basis. We look for a complement not someone identical, but we may begin to resent it. The key is talking out the difference...
Concludes Dr Rao: "When personalities are similar, couples tend to be happier since issues of daily living become easier to deal with. Personality differences may mean more conflict. Once two people decide to be together, they should be aware of their dissimilarities and learn to cope.

Antarchakshu: A unique workshop

In the picture alongside I am clicked with Mr Partho Bhowmick. He is unique in the sense that he teaches the visually challenged how to click photos with a camera!!!
How? I asked him...He explained that the visually challenged have the other senses much sharper than those who can see! I saw a photo where a visually challenged was clicked on the parapet of Marine Drive, cycling, where he was following the sound of the bycicle in front of him...But the visually challenged also take out photos.
Click on: www.blindwithcamera.org

To experience what the challenged go through...Was made to sit on a Wheelchair and experience the obstacles in the way...They even made me look for a piece of cloth that fell on the floor...pick it up and throw it on a high table. open a lock with one hand, explain with sign language, feel different cloth and idetify whether it is silk, satin, denim, smell and isentify different spices...
Other experiences: With the help of a volunteer walked blindfolded with a stick, Wrote and Signed my name, even hit at a ball with a bat hile trying to hear the ball coming towards me, used a computer, was shown how the visually impaired use a software that talks back to them... also was led to a table with goodies and savoured a samosa and cup cake, blindfolded...must admit that all the time time I was concerned as to how I would climb down the 5 steps that I had climbed up!

Yesterday I had a unique experience.
I was invited to to a workshop called Antarchakshu at St Xaviers College by one of my most inspiring Geeta students Kanchan Pamnani. Though she is visually challenged (Cannot see at all) She is a busy solicitor and managed a photo and mention in a magazine along with eminent women like Sonia Gandhi!

Antarchakshu means: Inner eye and opens your inner eye.
Kanchan in her note addressed to me further added:
... Since you are a friend of mine and a well wisher who wants to be aware I would really like you to attend the programme. It will just take you one hour
I am sure you will have a fun filled 1 hour.

It may have been fun filled but it was laced with making one more sensitive to the plight of the visually challenged!

...Yet it is an inspiring story of coming out winning against odds...Where are we, who can supposedly 'see' in this picture?

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

Some more interesting points that I heard at Swami Nithyananda's Workshop:
On Sanskrit:
Sanskrit words are phonetic.
The Sanskrit words include vibrations/feelings.
eg: A child first learns the M sound hence he calls his mother: Mama, Mummy, Ama Ami...
That is why it is said that even if one does not understand 'Mantras'the vibrations of the Mantras will have a positive effect.

On God's jobs:
God Creates
God sustains
God destroys
God adds Illusion (Maya) to His Creation
God liberates one from Maya and gives Liberation

Only in the last job man's co-operation is required.

I have heard:
There are 3 durlabh (difficult) things to attain
1) Maanas Shareer (A Human body)
2) An interest in Spiritual matters
3)A Spiritual Guide with whom one is able to connect.

The point I am making:
Let us not waste our Life and Time which is so precious...If one cannot give joy, let us not give grief...

Sunday, September 13, 2009

Yesterday I was invited to attend a Spiritual Workshop by Swami Nithyananda and his disciples. It was an Enlightening experience.
I was introduced to Swamiji. I was told that I could ask him for whatever...I asked: Make my family and loved ones feel fulfilled...Swamiji put tika on my head and said: I will personally look into it...What touched my heart was that he had obviously noticed that I had not asked anything for myself, because he added:..."and I will personally see that you are fulfilled..."
As I came out I realized that I had a bracelet on my arm...I had earlier been eyeing it and thinking of buying it but the counter was too crowded!...so naturally I was surprized to see it on my arm...I tried to go back but the door had been locked...I asked a volunteer and she said that Swamiji must have put it onto my arm...
I felt spiritually, mentally and materially enriched!
Some points mentioned at the Spiritual Workshop by Swamiji and his disciple:
1) Focus on your thoughts that are continuously bubbling...Just command 'Unclutch' to the thoughts...
2) Whatever you may be seeking in the outside world eg wealth, love, health, love...you are seeking Inner fulfillment...Actually all the fulfillment that you seek in the Outside world is your inner nature!
3) Living Enlightenment is only a Cognitive Shift...
4)Just outward objects cannot lead you to fulfillment...Dont expect too much from outer world achievements...
5)When you start working in the Internal world, the energy that awakens not only brings peace etc...but will also bring all that you were running after in the Outer World!
6) Learn to sit with yourself...connect with your emptiness...Dont always entertain yourself and escape...you come wired with the emptiness...it will remind you of what you came to achieve...When you become a seeker all your activities will become meditation. Just seek...That act is intelligent enough to take you towards Enlightenment...

For the Group 21 which was hosted by Ms Indu (Janki G.Vee) and myself Shakun. We invited Ms Mona Patel Shah, the perky lady who stood as an Independant Candidate.
In the picture from left: Myself introducing the Speaker and eminent guests, Ms Shobha Jethmalani Gehani, Ms Mona Patel, and Ms Maya Shahani.

Ms Mona Patel spoke about Global warming and what we as individuals need to do to help Mother Earth to continue to sustain us!

Some points:
The Big Bang..She compared it with what the Bhaagvad says about Creation.
It is more important to Be than to Do: Knowledge Faith and Deep Thought
There is enough for everyone's need not greed.
Mahatma Gandhi

What is Global warming doing to us?
Melting snow caps, the sea level is rising...heat waves in London? Wild fire in Australia and California?...Smog and acidrain...Lung and respiration disorder is on the rise...

Solutions: Recycle...Rain Water harvesting, Solar panels for geysers...Tata and Godrej areworking towards it...

People hold on to pain...past hurts and create a 'pain body'
This hurt body eats our 'joy'
People around with their hurt bodies create pain for others...
But we have a choice.
We can either nurture abuse within us or we can simply shake it off and move on...

Strange thing:
A pain body will try its best to sustain pain. It is a matter of survival...it will use logic to protect it....Look at unhappy people...

But
You can create a 'Bliss' body in you...in fact the 'Bliss Body' is one of the layers that exists in you...In deep sleep, the Bliss body opens up naturally. In the waking state, if one is committed to be happy and learns to look at life as a celebration the bliss centre will be awakened...

But also remember to:
have a balanced diet, do yoga, exercise, do pranayama, breathe deeply, keep your mind calm, have your intellect open and receptive!
Inspired by Swami Sukhabodhananda

Anonymous said...
delightful words there but one might ask as to how do you shake off the pain - it's easy said and done? - do you shake it off by balanced diet, yoga, breathing and so on??

My reply:
Yes you create a healthy mental body by doing the above...
But
In the waking state, if one is committed to be happy and learns to look at life as a celebration the bliss centre will be awakened...
How do you commit to be happy? By looking at life as a lesson, by looking at the positive aspects of your life, without denying what it is that makes you unhappy...

Anonymous replied:
yes you do that using all the techniques, it's an effort at first but effortless later on. Ego wants to hold on to all the pain but when u start opening up, you yourself will start dropping the unnecessary baggage because the clarity would dawn in you.

For the July meeting of Eager to B. we invited Ms Vartika to explain 'how to plan our money' One of our members asked: 'Explain us first how to get money before we plan it'
We also had Ms Deepa Kodikal to elighten us on how the Shiva Lingam is part of us and a part of existence.
The program was hosted by Ms Amla Ruia at her home.

What we learned, Ms Vartika explained:
Read your income tax balance sheet, Income tax returns...call your relationship manager in the Bank...Connect with your investment advisor...Same amount of the age of the person must be secure in fixed deposit...

Ms Deepa Kodikal explained:
The Shiva Lingam is the Unity of 2 opposite principles...Male and Female...It is a part of existence...Behind the Shiva Lingam is the entire principle of life...Before Creation of the Universe was the egg in the shape of the Lingam...

...understanding that to live in a balanced way in an unbalanced world we learned about materialism and Spirituality...What do you think?

Once, on my flight back from Singapore, as we stood in queue for 'immigration' a young smart well dressed lady jumped the queue....I shouted across at her:
WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS? you have just returned from Singapore! Would you do it there? Why the change of behaviour in 5 short hours?

There was a stunned silence and a nod of approval from other passengers...

I got the following on the Internet by Aakar Patel...I found some parts interesting...so giving you some excerpts:

Christianity and Islam are about how to enter heaven; Hinduism is about how not to return to earth...

Hinduism recognizes that the world is irredeemable: It is what it is. Perhaps this is where the Hindu gets his world view -- which is zero-sum -- from.

Our opportunism necessarily means that we do not understand collective good. Indians will litter if they are not policed. Someone else will always pick up the rubbish we throw. Thailand's toilets are used by as many people as India's toilets are, but they are likely to be not just clean but spotless. This is because that's how the users leave them, not the cleaners.

We show the pattern of what is called a Hobbesian society: one in which there is low trust between people. This instinct of me-versus-the-world leads to irrational behaviour, demonstrated when Indians board flights. We form a mob at the entrance, and as the flight is announced, scramble for the plane even though all tickets are numbered. Airlines modify their boarding announcements for Indians taking international flights.

What explains the behaviour of Indians? What explains the anarchy of our cities? To find out, we must ask how our behaviour is different.

Some characteristics unite Indians. The most visible is our opportunism. One good way to judge a society is to see it in motion. On the road, we observe the opportunism in the behaviour of the Indian driver. Where traffic halts on one side of the road in India, motorists will encroach the oncoming side because there is space available there. If that leads to both sides being blocked, that is fine, as long as we maintain our advantage over people behind us or next to us. This is because the other man cannot be trusted to stay in his place.

To return to the question we started with: Why is Brahma not worshipped? The answer is obvious: He has nothing to offer us. What he could do for us, create the universe, he already has. There is no gain in petitioning him now!

For prevention of Swine Flu
I have just received the following on the Internet...This is only a preventive method...Please go to the doctor and follow his advice in case of symptoms of Swine Flu...However I think this preventive method is not harmful...For further enquiries do go to the jiva website...
Shakun

Follows the note from the Internet:
Here are a few preventive tips:

Prevention:

1. Chyawanprash: Take 1 teaspoonful of this Ayurvedic tonic twice daily.

2. Kwatha (Decoction): Take 5 Tulasi (basil) leaves, 4 Kali Mirch (whole black pepper) beads, 3 Laung (clove) buds and 1 teaspoonful of fresh grated Adraka (ginger). Mix them in a glass of water and boil the entire mixture until the quantity of water is halved. Filter and add a teaspoonful of honey. Your Ayurvedic decoction is ready. Take this decoction twice daily.

3. Herbs: Mix ½ to 1 teaspoonful of Sitopaladi Churna with 1 teaspoonful of honey and have it twice daily.

4. Havan: Agnihotra or Havan is a nice way of purifying the environment. Use Ayurvedic herbs such as Guggul and Havan Samagri (mixture of herbs). Burn natural incense such as Chandan (sandal), lavender and Kesar (saffron) in order to sterilise your surroundings.

5. Golden Milk: Add ¼ teaspoonful of turmeric powder in a glass of warm milk. Drink it every night.

6. Avoid: For mental strength, avoid all junk foods and foods that are frozen, deep-fired or extremely sour.

7. Meditation: For spiritual power, do the Jiva Meditation on a daily basis.

8. Jivananda: Practice Jivananda lifestyle regimen regularly.

Hope the above pieces of advice will help you fight the deadly virus naturally. They can be followed even when you are continuing with modern medication.

We look forward to a healthier and happier you!

Do contact us for any questions you have.

Thanking You

Sincerely yours,

Paryushana is celebrated during the month of Bhadrapada (August)
During these days Jain devotees fast. They partake simple meals once a day. They stay away from vices and addictions.

It is a period for introspection, self- purification…
The word "Paryushan" has many meanings:
Pari+ushan=all kinds+to burn
It is to shed, burn our karmas that 12 different types of austerities are observed.
'ushan' also means to stay closer.
To stay closer to our own soul...
Pari+upshamana
upshamana=to overcome
to overcome our passions, anger, ego, desire...
Anekantvad
Jains believe that Reality has many aspects which is perceived differently by different people. The partial finding is sometimes contradictory to one another. But all points of view are real (from the perceiver's point of view)
Thus Jains established the theory of Non absolutist standpoint.
The above theory could dissolve so many conflicts as one can then 'agree to disagree'

Paryushana is a 10 day Jain Festival.
Dasha Lakshyana in Jainism could be understood as the 10 steps to Nirvaana. These in turn could be likened to the ten modes of behavior.
Each trait is assigned one day…
What are these ten traits?
Gentleness of nature
 Righteousness
Truthfulness
Cleanliness
Moderation in all we undertake
Devotional penance, study of religious tenets
Giving away in charity
Self imposed limit for worldly possessions
Maintaining moral behavior under all circumstances.

The last day of Paryushana is celebrated as the day of universal forgiveness.
Mahatma Gandhi said:
The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.
I got the following beautiful note by email:
 Michhami Dukkaddam
On the occasion of Paryushan Parva,
we ask for forgiveness,
if we may have hurt your feelings by thoughts, words or actions, knowingly or unknowingly. We forgive all the living beings
Khamemi Savve Jiva
We seek pardon from all the living beings
Savve Jiva Khamantu Me
We are friendly towards all the living beings
Mitti Me Savva Bhutesu
And we seek enemity with none Veram Majjham Na Kenvi And we ask for forgiveness from all Michhami Dukkaddam
I believe in the custom of having a day for asking forgiveness, but it must come from the heart and it should not become a meaningless ritual…Amongst the Christians, confession is therapeutic and requires courage just like ‘Michhami Dukaddam does…Hindus believe that dip in the Ganges can absolve one of sins…I believe that a true repentant heart does that…anytime…anywhere…having said that, it is good to have a time and place to pour out ones heart and ask for forgiveness whether it is from an aggrieved person or from the universe…I feel one can also forgive oneself and move on…Having said that Michhami Dukaddam all you beautiful people I know!

Above: A Lladro Krishna and cow gifted to me on my birthday last year...Exquisite, is'nt it?
13th of August 2009 we shall celebrate the birth of Krishna once again...
Do read the following story...It is interesting and you may have not read it before...

The Panchajanya Conch
(Shankha)
Most people think of Krishna as a naughty but lovable child.

However there are many facets to Krishna’s colorful character.

He annihilated many demons and was a great ruler.

He expounded the fascinating philosophy of the Bhaagvad Geeta before the Great Battle of Mahabharata was fought.

When the great battle Mahabharata was about to be waged in Kurukshetra, a conch was blown to strike terror into the hearts of the enemy.

That conch was called the Panchajanya Conch.
Today I am going to tell you how the conch came to be known by that name.

There was once a wicked demon. His name was Panchajanya.

Panchajanya tempted the young people into performing wrong acts.

By engaging in wrong activities, the young people’s lives were ruined.

Lord Krishna’s Guru’s name was Sandipany.

The son of Sandipany had become prey to the evil acts of Panchajanya.

Krishna rescued the son of Sandipany and returned him to his parents.

From the bones of Panchajanya, Krishna carved out a conch.

When this conch was blown, it warned the evil people what fate awaited them, if they continued in their wicked activities.

When the great battle Mahabharata was about to be waged in Kurukshetra, it was the Panchajanya conch that was blown to strike terror into the hearts of the enemy.

The conch is also blown during auspicious occasions.

The sound of the conch is like the ‘Om’ sound.

There is another story connected with the Conch.

There was a demon called Shankhaasura.

He defeated the Devas, stole the Vedas (Spiritual Scriptures) and went to the bottom of the ocean. The Devas prayed to Lord Vishnu for help.

Lord Vishnu incarnated as the Matsya (fish) Avtaar and killed Shankhaasura.

Lord Vishnu blew the conch shaped bone of his ear. The ‘Om’ sound came out of it and the Vedas were released from captivity.

That is the reason why the conch is called ‘Shankha’ and the knowledge of the Vedas is contained in the sound of ‘Om’ that emanates from the Shankha.

Mantras from the Bhagvad Geeta

Mantra for Victory over mind

VI/25 Ch 6 Verse 25

Shanais shanai ruparamet budhyaa dhiriti griheetaya
Aatma samsham manah kritwaa na kinchidapi chintayet

Little by little let him attain to quietude by the intellect held firmly;
Having made the mind establish itself in the Self,
Let him not think of anything.

Point to ponder upon:
Through the practice of meditation ‘establishing itself in the self’ one becomes ‘thoughtless’…But that happens ‘little by little’ (One has to persevere in ones practice)

A lot of people complain that they cannot meditate…I believe that initially one has ‘to attain quietude’ Just sit in a conducive place…Rather that chase away the thoughts…watch the thoughts.

Engage your senses…Watch the Murti of the Beloved Lord…or a rose or a sunset…Whatever can engage your eyes…
Smell the incense or the flowers…
Touch the Mala
Chant your Mantra and
Hear the chanted Mantra…

Mantras from the Bhagvad Geeta

Mantra for Destruction of obstacles in Yoga

V/29 Ch 5 Verse 29
Bhoktaaram yagna tapasaam sarvaloka maheshwaram
Suhridam sarva bhootaanaam jnaatwaa maam santi mricchati

He who knows Me as the enjoyer of sacrifices and austerities, the great Lord of all the worlds and the friend of all beings, attains to peace

My interpretation: The Lord is all in all…Yoga comes from the word. ‘yuj’ which means to connect, to join…Connect to what? We need to connect to the Higher Self who is the Lord…I would interpret ‘sacrifices’ as Karma, effort…’austerities does not necessarily mean to undergo difficulties which are self-imposed…In Kaliyuga ‘austerities’ is accepting those situations that come up in life, which one cannot change despite ones best efforts…So ‘surrender’ and one will attain peace…

Destruction of obstacles? Believe in the above and you will practice ‘Perfect Yoga’ and then of course , the obstacles will cease to exist!

Excerpts
Role of SindhWorkis (Sindhi Traders in foreign countries) in Gadar Revolt & INA under Subhash Chandra Bose

Submitted by:
Dial V. Gidwani- Sindhu American
,
Respecting the sacrifices of the Ancestors ,educating the future Generations.

The Sindhi Hindu community uprooted as the result of India’s Partition, now girdles the globe. But then for Sindhi traders, globalization was never a new concept. For decades, well before Partition, Sindhi traders (commonly known as SindhWorkis) had established themselves practically in every city of the world, with larger concentration in Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Malaysia; through the Middle East to Africa and Gibraltar, and across Britain and Europe to the U.S. and Latin America.

These SindhWorkis or Sindhi traders earned a fine reputation for trustworthiness and honesty in foreign countries. Their word was known as a bond. They supported local, social events and aided worthwhile charities from time to time, locally and in Sindh and India. They were religious and remained steadfast in their family, social and cultural roots and religious identity. Largely their donations were to religious institutions, mandirs (temples) and gurdwaras but many like Bahi Wattumall, Chellarams. Bhai Maghnamal of K A J Chotirmull and many others gave much for educational and social purposes for Sindhis and others.

The SindhWorkis kept a low profile while giving aid and support. As the grand old man heading the Watumalls is said to remark when someone questioned him as to why he does not publicize his charities, he quoted Rahim who was a great philanthropist, “dene wala koi aur hai; log brahm mujh pay kyoun karen!” (Means: Giver is Some One Else - implying that there is some Higher Power that is the Giver - So why should people think that I am the giver?). Later, when Watumalls established the public foundation for Education, naturally their charities had to come out in the open.

By and large SindhWorkis remained aloof from politics. Many suffered almost silently the pain of India for its being a colony of the British but there was no organization worth the name till the first decade of the twentieth century through which they could channel their frustration and funds . A change in the attitude of the SindhWorkis came about with the formation of the Gadar Party early in the second decade of the twentieth century.

Establishment of the Gadar Party:

The Gadar Movement was established around 1912-1913. It was the first organized violent bid for freedom after the uprising (Indian War of Independence) of 1857. Gadar in Punjabi means “revolt” – and indeed this revolt was the saga of courage, valor and determination of overseas Indians to free India from the shackles of British slavery...
It was as the result of Rash Bihari Bose’s effort that some Sindhis also became sympathizers and helpers of the Gadar Movement. Notable among them were Dr. Choithram P. Gidwani, who was in regular touch with Rash Bihari Bose... Please note the following extract on page 89 of The Sindh Story by K.R.Malkani (published by Sindhi Academy Delhi):

There was considerable sympathy and support among the people of Sindh for the Gadar Movement.
...As many as 145 Gadarites were hanged by Indian Government, 308 were sentenced for longer than 14 years and many more for lesser terms. Some of them passed years in KALA PANI (Black waters) in the Andamans.

Fourteen Gadarites remained hidden in Sindh for long, sheltered through aid from the Brahmacharya Ashram. They moved out to safety, with changed identities and in disguise with somewhat altered appearance, when the police- hunt for them was no longer hot.

Dr. Choithram as also most Sindhis had by now had begun to embrace the Gandhian doctrine of non-violence as the way to make the British leave India. They no longer subscribed to the Gadarite philosophy of force and violence to gain independence. But even so, they felt honour bound to protect the Gadarites from police-hunt. “We have promises to keep”, they said, and they kept their promise. They also said among themselves, “If Gandhiji knew, he would understand”, but they left Gandhiji uninformed.

Support of SindhWorkis:

Sindhi traders (SindhWorkis) began to support the Gadar Movement. Certainly, the SindWorkis were not in the frontline of the movement. Their support largely consisted of financial donations – often substantial – to the movement. In one case, the firms of Pohoomal Bros, D.Chelaram, M.Dialdas & J.T.Chanrai of Hong Kong contributed on a large scale to a fund for the purchase of ammunition for an armed rising by Gadarites. Quite apart from this ad hoc assistance, SindhWorkis were paying regularly to the Gadarite treasury. The SindhWorki support also extended, in many cases, to providing safe-houses to hide the Gadar revolutionaries. Moreover, SindhWorkis were able to help Gadarites in passing their important and confidential messages as they had a vast and intricate network covering practically every country with associates, correspondents and in many cases, even branch offices.

Again, as The Sindh Story by K.R.Malkani points out, “When Subhash Chandra Bose set up INA in the Far East, his best and biggest supporters were the Sindhi businessmen there. Both Subhas Bose and Gandhiji referred to Sindhis as ``World Citizens'' since they are to be found everywhere.”

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose is immortalized in our History for having formed the Azad Hind Government in exile, and regrouping and leading the Indian National Army to battle against the allies in Imphal and Burma during the World War II.

Sindhi families abroad donated large sums of money, ornaments, jewelry to support the Independence movement of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

Among the Sindhworkis who distinguished themselves by supporting these freedom movements are:

1) Wassiamull Assumall 2) J. Kimatrai 3) Utoomal Assudomal 4) Gangaram, Singapore
5) Jhamandas Melwani, Hongkong/Singapore 6) Sehwani family (Manila) 7) K a J Chotirmall, Hongkong/Singapore8) Kewalram Corpoartion, Japan 9) Gulraj Corpoartion, Japan 10) P Parsram, Japan 11) Watumull's Hawaii 12) Watanmal Bulchand 13) Chanrais 14) D Chellaram 15) G. Assanmall 16) Jhangimull and many others

There are times in life where the more one tries to remedy a situation with someone, the worse it becomes. When you encounter a situation where even communication fails, then recite the following Mantra. It is the 15th verse of the 15th chapter of the Bhagvad Geeta. Lord Krishna states:

Sarvasya chaaham hridi sannivishto
Mattas smritir jnaanama pohanamcha
Vedaishcha sarvaair ahameva vedyo
Vedaanta krid veda videva chaaham

Which means:
I am seated in the hearts of all.
Knowledge and memory stem from Me,
as well as their absence.
I Am verily that which has to be known by all the Vedas.
I Am the author of the Vedanta,
and the Knower of the Veda I AM.
The key sentence here is that Krishna claims that He is seated in the hearts of all. As you recite this Mantra, know that the other person is aware of whatever you truly are experiencing vis-à-vis them, and/or the situation.
It pays to pray to Hanumanji as He was the instrument in re-uniting Shri Ram with Ma Seeta. Also Shree Ram is forever indebted to Hanumanji as the latter wanted nothing in return for His services. All He wanted was to continue to be devoted to the Divine Pair.

Dear Friends,
Lately I have been compiling Mantras from the Bhagvad Geeta to achieve various 'goals'

Mantra from the Bhagvad Geeta

Mantra for steadfastness in devotion

IV/ 5 Chapter 4 Verse 5
Sri Bhagavan uvaacha

Bahoono me vyateetani janmaani tava chaarjuna
Taanyaham veda sarvaani na twam vettha parantapa

The Blessed Lord said:
Many births of Mine have passed, as well of thine, O Arjuna
I know them all but thou knowest not, O Parantapa (scorcher of foes)

One would wonder why this Mantra has been recommended for ‘steadfastness in devotion’…my interpretation would be:
We are immortal Souls…as a Human Being our main aim is to Know that…however it is not an easy task…So if we learn that we continue the journey incarnating again and again and Krishna is with us…how can our Bhakti not yield fruit? We just need to have faith and persevere…like Shirdi Sai Baba recommends: Shraddhaa (Faith) and Saburi and (Patience)

Note from Divyaa Kummar
http://www.divyaakummar.com
Dearest all, posted below is a forwards thank to nandinie, on the eclipses!

My personal view on the eclipses: the more you are in sync with Self; the more you are in The Now; the more is it all cosmic 'play' - the less will eclipses (as ultimately they belong to separation - time - rules within the human mind ) 'affect' you;

"When there’s no wall, there is no need of a window"-Rumi

Also the solar eclipse is the moon coming in between earth and sun- the moon symbolizes briefly put...the yin, divine feminine, unconscious, pure beingness; and the sun symbolizes briefly put the yang -conscious mind and its deepest pure awareness ; so to me it describes more than portends what's happening- the rise of the unconscious- divine feminine within us- merging with the 'conscious mind'... conscious awareness of the unconscious... call it the human kundalini rising ... call it moving into supra consciousness.... call it transformation... towards a newer sun and moon within us...into a new awareness;new beingness; thus the increased intuition every one speaks about -as intuition literally means in touch with Self beyond just knowledge;

For those who want to know how to read the below astro input forwarded thanks to nandinie - check your horoscopes to see your 'ascendant'; in Indian charts its called your 'lagna'; that is your first house, and sequentially following it are houses 2-12 (many charts number the houses anyways); the eclipse is occurring in cancer-so check which house has the zodiac sign cancer - and that and its opposite house is what the below chart combination refers to: for example if I have cancer in my 12th house- then I read the 12/6 combo; if cancer is my 11th house I read the 11/5 combo... also deepens if major planets in it; ofcourse below info is brief- some of you who have my calendars can get more info on what the houses mean thus what area is most impacted for you-or google ... solar eclipse in zodiac signs etc read on astro website!

-The sun and moon are in the same Astrological Sign - and thus there is great power within the energy of that sign...

Enjoy,be in touch with Self , be on the brink of all things good through the eclipse...allow all that's done to go and all that's to be fulfilled to come in!

The world over, rain is seen as a nuisance - especially in the western countries, it is called a 'spoilsport' but in India, rain is seen as the benefactor of mankind! The face of a farmer with his palm to his forehead, looking at the skies for black, water-bearing clouds is a common icon in our culture. So is the picture of a woman waiting for her lover in this season of love. Rain - or water - is seen in Indian culture as the symbol of life and its eternal flow. It is season of dance, Raas, love and music. Don't forget the immortal Meghdoot of Kalidasa begins with 'Ashadhsya pratham divase' meaning 'on the first rainy day of Ashadh...." So our poetry, our music, our dance and our very lives are entwined with the theme of rain and its benevolence to our land. In fact, Krishna is the black clouds (Ghanashyam) who rains his mercy on us through water so we sing 'Ghanashyam barso re'. No country looks at rain as we do.

True reform could mean changing what power means to India.
Brazil, Russia, India and China are rising economic stars but what does India offer that others don't?
...Millions of people accept the validity of following a spiritual path without dogma, priests, rules and the absolute authority of scripture...Milions of seekers look to India's spiritual traditions for enlightenment...
Most problems that face society cannot be solved without a shift in consciousness.
India has the right and obligation to lead because consciousness is our culture's unique speciality. It is our culture's common thread over centuries of conquest and constant change...
